The Scorch Trials, by James Dashner

Synopsis

     Solving the Maze was supposed to be the end. Thomas was sure that escape from the Maze wouldn´t mean freedom for him and the Gladers. But WICKED isn´t done yet. Phase Two has just begun. The Scorch. There are no rules. There is no help. You either make it or die. The Gladers have two weeks to cross the Scorch - the most burned-out section of the world. And WICKED has been sure to adjust the variables and stack the odds against them. 

     After swallowing every page of The Maze Runner book 1, it couldn´t be diffetent with The Scorch Trials. James Dashner has an incredible pace of writing that mesmerizes the reader in a way you can´t leave the book before you´re done with it - or until you know there´s a book 2.
     Holding the hope that finding the Maze´s exit would be the end of all the Gladers´s suffering wasn´t enough. James Dashner didn´t spare Thomas and his friends on his creativity as a writer. Now the challenges are bigger and deeper, and there´s no rule or no help. The Gladers now are obligated to go through the Scorch and face the worst place on earth to be at - a burned landscape area where danger could come from every direction. Although they had a choice to either go or not to the Scorch, they were promised to be given the cure for the Flare - the awful virus that took control of a great part of the population after the Sun flares burned the earth. The human race is fading and now they can see it with their eyes, and now they have no choice but cooperate with WICKED in order to try to have a "normal" life.
     What the reader does not expect to see is the testing of how far a friendship can go. How can you be sure someone is loyal to you when you do not even remember your past? One of the tests the Scorch promotes is about the strength of the Gladers´s friendship, combined with many other peculiarities in order to examine their actions to a bigger purpose. Will all of this effort be worth it?
     The author proves again his ability to write in a fast-paced rythm and conquers the reader with it, though sometimes the sequence of events can be overwhelming and lead to a exhaustive reading. Thinking out of the box is still present in book 2, but mostly of all, it makes the public think about how far humans can go in a limited world and their unlimited selfishness. I wonder if all the dystopias aren´t just what the future holds for us. Maybe they are.
